How Often to Get Your Vehicle’s Transmission Serviced

Transmission Repair Colorado Springs

There are many things that you need to take into consideration when it comes to taking care of your vehicle. One of the most important, but often overlooked, is getting your transmission serviced regularly. Your vehicle’s transmission is a crucial component as it delivers power to the wheels and allows movement forward and backward. Maintaining its condition is fairly and relatively inexpensive. If you wait to schedule transmission service, signs of problems and damage are already taking place and can result in costly transmission repairs. Many vehicle owners don’t realize that transmissions also have a maintenance schedule just like oil changes, tire rotations, etc. to keep their car running smoothly. Make sure to follow the maintenance intervals that are recommended by the manufacturer for your specific vehicle.
There is a difference between a transmission flush and a transmission fluid change. A transmission fluid flush involves connecting the transmission to a machine, which completely flushes the transmission fluid out until the lines are clean, then refills it with new clean fluid. A transmission fluid change drains the fluid out with gravity. A fluid change does not completely drain all the fluid out but replaces most of the old fluid with fresh transmission fluid. Either one of these services can extend the life of your transmission.

Here are maintenance suggestions for both automatic and manual transmissions:

Automatics Transmission

It is recommended that automatics be serviced every 15 months or 15,500 miles. If it's well taken care of, and you don't live in a region with extreme year-long heat, then your transmission can last more than 124,000 miles. However, transmissions that are not regularly serviced can even potentially fail after half that number of miles. If your vehicle endures heavy use, such as towing boats or trailers or excessively accelerating or decelerating, you should consider a transmission fluid change about every 30,000 miles, depending on your vehicle’s make and model.

Manual Transmission

Manuals allow a driver to control their engine RPMs, so power is there when needed and provides better fuel economy. About every other oil change, you should ask your mechanic to check the transmission fluid level and make sure the fluid doesn’t need to be topped off or changed.

The best care for your vehicle is to schedule regular maintenance services as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, including your transmission.
